Question for the week of Jan 31st - Feb 4th.

The past two weeks you have learned about the US Reconstruction time period after the War Between the States.  Knowing what you know now explain what you would have done if you had been the US President or a US Congressman, and why would your way have made any real changes to the violence and poverty kept the South in such bad condition?

You have until Sunday Feb 6th to answer this and comment on someone else's answer.  Enjoy... Coach Herring

If I would have been able to do anything I would have done more to help the south economically. Because all those bitter feelings towards blacks was because no one had any money and people were taking it on the group that couldn't really fight back. If I could better the economic state of the south then improving the south politically and socially would have probably come easier.

IF I WAS A COMGRESSMAN, I WOULD HAVE LOWER THE MILITARY OCCUPATION BUT HAVE SOME TO HAVE SOME CONTROL. IF I WAS THE PRESIDENT I WOULD HAVE ALSO HAD SOME MILITARY OCCUPATION LIKE IF I WERE A CONGRESSMAN.

I AGREE WITH KIMBERLY BECAUSE I WOULD JUST JOIN THE NORTH AND SOUTH FIRST THEN DO WHAT SHE SAID

Thanks Cody and I think lowering the military occupation would have been a good idea. Being controlled by the people that kicked your butt would make anyone angry.

If I was able to do something, I would definetly do something as the President. As the President, I would make sure that things would be easier on the South. I think that when things got better politically, socially and economically, things would be better for everyone, especially for the newly freed slaves.

Kimberly, I definetly agree with you. I agree because, the South would be in loads of trouble using the congressinal plan.

Chanel makes a good point and i would help economically mostly because thats what was destroyed and if you dont fix what really needs fixing the most because all people was worried about was mostly money.

I totally agree with Chanel and Kimberly. The South did need economical help. And being mean to the blacks didn't help anything.

If I were the President or even just a Congressman, I believe that I would have made real changes, by enforcing with moderation. You can't just use brute force to get your point to someone, but you can't just ignore the fact that there are some things that needed to be fixed. If you gradually started to push your laws onto the South bit by bit, they would've just given in, or in time, not even notice.

If i were the president at the time, i would focus on reconstructing the buildings first, then consentrate on the social issues. as i reconstruct the buildings, though, i would not totaly ignore and pretend to be oblivious to the racism going on around me. i would tell the military to arrest any wite man to murder a black man as a regular murderer.

if i were a congressman at the time i would work more on helping the south econoomically like what kimberly said but i would also focus on supporting education in the south so the former slaves could have an education and help rebuild the south but i guess the racial issue would interfere with that plan.
